The Kribensis is often one of the first fish recommended to people who are interested in breeding fish, and it’s easy to see why. This fish has amazing parental care and watching them raise a batch a fry is truly an amazing experience, highly recommended for any hobbyist. Watching the parents gently gather up their young and bring them closer to the food in the tank, was a highlight in my fish keeping career. They are also a truly beautiful fish who get along really well in most community setups. They do get protective while guarding their young so a 40 gallon or larger tank is recommended for a pair if other community fish are present. For a single pair a 20 gallon tank would be a great home. If you are only keeping males or only females they should do well with most community fish tank setups. Kribensis do well in a planted aquarium and generally will not bother your plants. Males grow larger than females, however females obtain stronger coloring especially in their red belly (which is very vibrant when preparing to lay eggs). Kribensis are cave spawners and will accept most artificial caves or other structures (such as piled rocks) that you give them in the aquarium for this purpose.
